A comparative advantage of NOAGE® cosmetics is that they use exclusively dry, standardized extracts of pharmaceutical-grade plants, which differ significantly from liquid extracts, especially in the concentration of active ingredients. Specifically, in dry extracts, that concentration is usually between 50% and 100%, while in liquid extracts it is typically between 1% and 2%. This allows us to achieve up to 100 times higher concentrations of bioactive substances compared to industry standards.

You may wonder why everyone doesn’t use dry extracts? The main reason is that dry extracts are far more expensive and generally more difficult to work with; they are mostly used in the preparation of medicines. With dry extracts, you also receive an analysis for each production batch so you can know exactly how much of each active substance is in the extract. Liquid extracts, on the other hand, do not come with such an analysis-only a general list of ingredients, but you never know how much active substance is actually in the extract.

A cream is a highly complex system of various materials and active substances that must be in a precisely defined ratio in order to function properly. For a product like a cream to achieve maximum effectiveness, it must be stable, gentle, non-irritating, capable of helping deliver active ingredients into the deeper layers of the skin, protect the skin, and enhance its healing ability. At higher extract concentrations, emulsions become unstable. Therefore, it is crucial that there are sufficient active ingredients and that a synergistic effect is achieved between the active substances and the carriers. To accomplish this, we must have a complete understanding of the extract contents, their concentrations, functions, and interactions with other active substances in the formulation.

The research and development team at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Ljubljana, led by Prof. Damjan Janeš, MPharm, PhD, is developing the NOAGE® formulations.

Damjan Janeš earned his PhD in 2007 at the Faculty of Pharmacy in Ljubljana, where he worked as an assistant professor at the Department of Pharmaceutical Biology. He taught courses related to medicinal plants: Pharmacognosy, Phytopharmacy, Biogenic Drugs, and Cosmetic Ingredients of Natural Origin. His research focuses on gas chromatography, and he studies compounds essential to scent and flavor, as well as compounds of interest as potential new active substances.
